Eleven students from the Cienega Photography program attended the Weddings Portrait Photographers International (WPPI 2012) Conference in Las Vegas. The conference is a fast tempo training venue with a world renowned expo with all of the top vendors in the photography industry. Over 13,000 photographers were in attendance this year. The students were in class with other photographers from all over the world, listening to successful strategies throughout each of the three days. The students also had the opportunity to sit through the articulation of judging this year’s international portrait contest. Students returned back to Cienega fired up about venturing more professionally into the industry. The return trip included an early morning shoot of Hoover Dam and the new Arizona to Nevada Bridge.

The students funded their entire way to the conference with one major fundraiser, which was a community effort at Acacia Elementary. The students set up studio lighting and provided prints for the Father-Daughter dance. The students raised over a $1000 with the photo shoot. Image attached of client, Joe Grossi and daughter, taken by Ericka Edwards

The Saturday after the return, the school studio was opened for a workshop to reinforce some of the lighting techniques learned at WPPI. The student pictured is a CTE Culinary student from Cienega Crystal Sellers, taken by photo student Chance Calgher.

The WPPI image attached is of the students who attended. Although not a requirement, the selected students are taking at least one AP course in their schedule. The students were in agreement, one of their best high school experiences.

Julie Ellis, Business Management Teacher at Vail Academy and High School, had plenty of reasons to be proud of Victoria Kirlin:

Victoria has gone above and beyond her classroom activities. She is currently our Moodle/website coordinator for FBLA. She has done an amazing job keeping up the website, adding pictures and making sure all the students are informed about the upcoming events.
She is a self-starter in creating new idea. Example: She wanted to do a promotion for the student store and created Ice Cream Friday’s. She did all the necessary paperwork, met with the Principle, made advertisements to put around school, wrote up an announcement, and made it a huge success! All the students at the school love this.
She also took it upon herself to create the student store schedule for the whole semester.
Every morning she comes into my classroom with either new ideas or asks what she can do to help.
I am so lucky to have a student so willing to go above and beyond that I can’t thank her enough for all that she does.
She is truly a student of the month!

Born in Safford, Ariz., in the early 1940s, Merrell’s career included earning Vocational Teacher of the Year in Arizona, a NISOD Award at Central Arizona College, and an honor from the Arizona Cotton Growers Association.
Considered the founding father of agricultural education at CAC, Merrell practiced what he preached – farming – which he did for two decades. He also was a pest control adviser, owner and operator of Hacienda Ag Labs, and served as president of the Farm Bureau, the Pinal County Fair Board and the Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association. He was an adviser of the CAC Rodeo Club and an academic adviser and livestock committee chairman.
The National Future Farmers of America is a dynamic youth organization that changes lives and prepares students for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
The FFA was founded in 1928 to provide leadership training for high school students of vocational agriculture. The 33 young farm boys who congregated in Kansas City’s Baltimore Hotel that year could not have predicted how the organization they started would become a leader in agricultural education nationwide.
In 1950, the 81st Congress of the United States, recognizing the importance of the FFA as an integral part of the program of vocational agriculture, granted a Federal Charter to the FFA. Today, the FFA uses agricultural education to prepare students for more than 300 careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture.
Since 1928, millions of agriculture students – no one knows exactly how many – have donned the official FFA jacket and championed the FFA creed.
The FFA has opened its doors and its arms to minorities and women, ensuring that all students can reap the benefits of agricultural education, which prepares students for successful careers and a lifetime of informed choices in the global agriculture, food, fiber and natural resources systems.
The Future Farmers of America organization remains committed to the individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
Now the organization is expanding the nation’s view of traditional agriculture and finding new ways to infuse it into the classroom.
The iconic blue corduroy jacket proudly worn by FFA members embodies years of history, tradition and excellence in agricultural education.

Several students, from Tim Nichols Advanced Photography class, visited Cottonwood Elementary to meet with a group of 4th and 5th graders that have been working on a year long photography project. The elementary students have been traveling on the weekends to different Tucson locations and events capturing images for a project called “Through Our Eyes”. The students have hundreds of shots and wanted to learn how to choose the best ones and do some editing. CHS Photography students spent the afternoon working one on one with them and the impact was priceless.

Read what Ashley Curtis, 1st grade teacher at Cottonwood had to say about the experience:

As for the “photography mentoring” WOW WOW WOW! These high school students were so knowledgeable. They were passionate and excited as well as patient. My students (and I) learned so much from their expertise.
I have students coming in during their lunch, at morning, and after school editing their pictures, trying new ideas that the high schools shared with them. They are looking at the pictures in a new way. Just the experience of getting pieces critiqued and seeing that it doesn’t mean something is good or bad, was a fantastic learning opportunity.

Hannah is one of the leaders in the class and is always willing to step up and take the lead on any project. When the CTE Marketing project was announced, Hannah took the reins and started planning ways to introduce our program to other students, designing displays, assisting other students, and writing a plan for our project.
Hannah is a Varsity softball player and despite the time she has to dedicate to her sport, she still has committed to do volunteer work for the Public Safety Club fundraising efforts to compete in our SkillsUSA competitions.
