Founded in 1903, the Vail School District was once a ranching community with a one-room schoolhouse. Now, over one hundred years later, the Vail School District continues to serve the community with the old-fashioned values of hard work and high standards, but in modern mediums and with up-to-date methods.
Because the Vail/SE Tucson region of Southern Arizona has experienced immense residential and commercial growth over the past decade, the Vail School District is now one of the fastest growing districts in Arizona. At present, the Vail School District has seven elementary schools, four middle schools, two comprehensive high schools, an alternative high school, and two charter schools. 10,259 students are currently enrolled in grades K-12.
As new schools are built and old ones trek forward in the pursuit of academic excellence, the Vail School District is careful to continuously scrutinize what is best for students and families in light of the ever-changing cultural and generational paradigm. For example, because technology has infiltrated the lives of families across the country, the Vail School District strives to ensure that teachers, parents, and students have the tools they need to succeed in the classroom, in the workplace, and in the larger global community.
It is the mission of the Vail School District to “provide parents with safe and nurturing school communities where their children can obtain a quality education.” As such, an important emphasis is placed on not only the individual student, but also the student’s extended network – their family, friends, and the community at-large. The second part of the mission statement is equally important in that the district is committed to academic rigor and excellence. Instructing students is, after all, the quest of all educational institutions.
One of the other distinguishing characteristics of the Vail School District is the positive relationship that exists between the school district and the surrounding community. Local businesses, government officials, and non-profit organizations often step to the plate to cheer on students, to assist parents, and to celebrate teachers.
The District has won countless awards, achieved honors, and been highlighted across the country, but none of these accomplishments could have taken place without the people who make up the VSD staff. The 1600+ employees of the Vail School District are truly the flesh and blood on the skeleton of curricular endeavors and academic programs. The District strives to hire only the very best teachers and staff members – people who are forward-thinking innovators, diplomatic leaders, and strong communicators.
As the Vail School District plunges forward towards continued growth (not only in terms of numbers, but also in excellence and creativity), we thank the parents, students, staff members, and community members who have contributed to our success in the past, who are giving of themselves so generously in the present, and who will make a difference in the lives of children and young people in the future. As Helen Keller wrote, “alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
